Houston Federation of Garden ClubsThe Houston Federation of Garden Clubs was organized by a group of women wanting a city-wide garden club in 1936. Their objectives were to hold monthly lectures, second publish a garden magazine for the Texas Gulf Coast, and third to build a garden center. The first meeting was held in the Houston Public Library and so launched their organization. Mr. Teas of Teas Nursery w2as their first speaker and the third objective was reached in 1938, when they found a plot of land in the Rose Garden in Herman Park. Against insurmountable odds, with assistance from 65 local business leaders and a grant  from the WPA , and many fashion shows, flower shows and train trips to the East for fundraisers they were able to build a building in 1941 with 97 garden clubs represented. They maintained this building and gardens until 1958 when it was turned over to the city and they continued to meet there until 2014.
In 1961, the Club was federated into the National Garden Council of State Garden Clubs ( now known as the National Garden Clubs, Inc).
Over the years HFGC has contributed to many areas across Houston. They’ve planted hundreds of trees at the VA Hospital, as well as parks, and shopping centers.  Their members also restored gardens after Hurricane Carla and designing landscaping for a Community Center in the midst of a 200 -home Habitat for Humanity neighborhood.  HFGC built the Ronald MacDonald House greenhouse, made large donations to Target Hunger, established garden habitats at three school campuses and worked with other charitable organizations of Toys for Tots, Salvation Army and Star of Hope, A continuing project is having volunteers work in the gardens at the  Brookwood Community. We are currently working with an elementary school on their butterfly garden. HFGC offers scholarships to college Juniors through post Graduate students who are majoring in a Horticultural Field.
HFGC is made up of 41 clubs and 9 Affiliates that are also working in areas around Houston to spread knowledge and beauty of gardening to children, elderly citizens and their own club members. We are all striving to help the environment and to spread the peace found in a garden.  https://www.houstonfederationgardenclubs.org/

Our main purpose is to create and keep families together through pet adoptions, pet resources, and our low-cost animal wellness clinic. We receive no government funding and rely solely on donations, program services, and special events.
